Vlkolinec

is a reservation of traditional folk architecture. The first written mention goes back to 1376. It used to be a settlement of woodcutters and coalmen. Heraldic rose in combination with a coniferous tree and green sward used to be the settlement's emblem. Since Vlkolinec is the only village in Slovakia without modern built-up area it is a lively representation of mountain settlements in Slovakia. The village has 45 preserved log houses from 16lh to 19'h century. The wooden bell tower is the dominant of the village. The object of interest could be a well with drinking water which is still in use. There is also a museum in the village, so called Roľnícky dom, with the exhibition of indigenous housing, and the information centre. A long-term project aimed on revival of the village and restoration of traditional social style came into being several years ago. The present population of Vlkolinec reaches 20.
